Atmosphere Study Guide 16 Station: Demonstration – lightning [Task] In your work book, answer the following questions about lightning before and after you watch your teacher’s demonstration of the Van der Graaff generator. 1. When do you see lightning? 2. What do you think causes lightning? Watch your teacher make a spark with the Van der Graaff generator. 3. What is causing the spark to arise? 4. How is the Van der Graaff generator simulating real lightning found in a storm? 5. What is lightning a form of? 6. Write down five questions you have after watching the demonstration. 7. Write down any other observations about the effects of static electricity on objects. Station: Floating water [Task] Complete the following activities and answer the questions in your work book. 1. Fill a flask with water. 2. Make sure the water it up to the lip of the flask. 3. Place the playing card over the top of the flask. Press down on it so it has a good seal around the edge of the flask. 4. Place your hand over the card. 5. Over the sink, carefully turn the flask upside down. 6. Remove your hand from the card. 7. The card and the water should stay in place. 8. Explain what force is holding up the water and the card? 9. Suggest some other ways that you might you be able to demonstrate this force in other mini experiments. Station: Air has mass? [Task] Complete the following activities and answer the questions in your work book. 1. Do you think air weighs anything? Why/why not? 2. Put a small wad of plasticine around the end of the balloon. 3. Weigh the empty balloon and record its mass. 4. Blow up the balloon and tie a knot in the end. 5. Put the same piece of plasticine around the end of the blown up balloon. 6. Place the balloon on the balance and record its weight. 7. Why did we use plasticine on the end of the balloon? 8. Was there a difference in the weights? What was it? 9. Does air weigh anything? 10. Can you think of another way to weigh air? Write down your method. Explore (student activities)
