Atmosphere Study Guide 15 Station: Demonstration – egg in the bottle [Task] In your work book, answer the following questions before and after you watch your teacher’s demonstration of the egg in the bottle. Answer the following questions before you watch the demonstration: 1. Your teacher is going to attempt to put the peeled boiled egg inside the bottle without touching it. Do you think it can be done? Why/why not? 2. Can you think of a way your teacher could do this? Watch your teacher do the following demonstration: – light the taper/match and place it inside the bottle – place the egg on top of the bottle. Now complete the following activities: 3. Explain what happened. 4. Explain how you think it happened. Station: Demonstration – shrinking marshmallows [Task] Observe your teacher’s demonstration and complete the following questions and activities in your work book. 1. Draw a quick diagram of what the marshmallow with the smiley face drawn onto it looks like. Watch your teacher do the following demonstration: – connect the bell jar to the vacuum pump – place the marshmallow in the bell jar – turn on the vacuum pump. 2. Write down what happens to the marshmallow and draw a new diagram of what it now looks like. 3. What does the vacuum pump do to the air in the bell jar? 4. What effect does this have on the marshmallow? Now watch as your teacher turns the pump off and lets the air back into the jar. 5. Write down what happens to the marshmallow. 6. Write down an explanation as to why the marshmallow changed shape. Station: Demonstration – collapsing can [Task] Observe your teacher’s demonstration and complete the following questions and activities in your work book. Your teacher will complete the following steps: – s et up the Bunsen burner, tripod and gauze mat for heating – place 10 mL of water into the can – when steam begins to come out of the can, place the lump of plasticine over the opening to ensure that it is sealed up – quickly dunk the can into the bucket of hot water. 1.
