Atmosphere Study Guide 13 [Task] Exploring extreme weather Have a look at the photographs in the “The storm chasers” article. Discuss and answer the following questions with other class members. 1. Have you ever experienced an extreme weather event? 2. How did it make you feel? 3. Make a list of the effects that extreme weather events, such as storms and cyclones, can have on communities? 4. What do you think it would be like to be a ‘storm chaser’? 5. What sorts of human activities impact the atmosphere? 6. It is predicted that there will be many more extreme weather events in the future. a. What do you think about this? b. How will future generations cope with more violent storms, electrical activity, cyclones and hurricanes? c. What changes will have to be made to their lives in areas such as: – the infrastructure in cities (for example, transport, telecommunications food storage, homes) – employment – schooling? 7. Do humans have a responsibility to protect the atmosphere from pollution? Why/why not? 8. What are some ways that human impacts on the atmosphere may be reduced? Making waves Waves explode over a seawall in Galveston, Texas as Hurricane Ike approaches on 12 September 2008. Ike came ashore in the early hours of September 13, bringing with it a four-metre-high storm surge that swept through Galveston Island and the mainland, resulting in nearly 100 deaths and US$30 billion in damage. Engage
